Symbolic continuity to the previous forms of Russian statehood, including the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, is one of the crucial elements of justification of their actions for the authorities of the Russian Federation. The history of these forms of statehood is laid in a special narrative, from which the line of actions of Russian Federation authorities is logically formed.

Despite the desire for state ideology in the Russian Federation, there is no single approach to understanding state continuity and heritage, which leads to numerous contradictions, errors, and "white spots" in the historical narratives of different state bodies.

The main purpose of the study is to identify and describe the main problems of the state narrative about continuity in the Russian Federation. In addition, an important part of the work is the study of historical narratives of Russian state bodies as actors of symbolic policy in the Russian Federation (1991-2021).

There are two main objectives of the research:

The study of the role and significance of the state continuity concept in the formation of the Russian Federation in its relation to the Russian Empire and USSR (as a part of a process of post-communist nation-states formation in Central and Eastern Europe).

The study of the content and forms of narratives about the continuity of state bodies of Russia, reasons for their formation, features of development, and problems of functioning.
